IMovie Production Presents... Time!

The class was divided into groups to create self-portrait videos dealing with one word only. One group had to create a video together dealing with the word time. The group gathered together during class time and brainstormed some ideas of what represents time and how they can film it. After coming up with multiple ideas on time, the group went off and recorded their own videos on what they did during the whole day and to represent a clock in every shot. Some problems that were faced while shooting was that the group wasn’t together while shooting the videos, so it was all done individually. Another struggle of shooting the video was to make sure what you were filming deals with the word time. Also, you have to represent yourself in the video so the group had to make sure that they were being represented in each video. The class watches the video when completed they should know what person in the group is being identified during the video. Problems with editing the video could deal with transferring the video onto a flash drive from a phone, or editing the video onto iMovie. IMovie can be difficult with editing with, when you don’t have much knowledge of using it. A problem dealing with iMovie was to always remember to save the raw footage before you create it into other movies. When the groups had to do their individual movies, they cut their videos into whatever segments they wanted it to be. While creating a video as a group, you need those raw videos that weren’t edited to create for the group video. IMovie was a difficult experience for most because it was complex and hard to remember the certain tools to use on it. Some struggles some groups faced was that they had a lot of video content to choose from to go into their videos. It was difficult to edit and cut back on videos because there was a certain amount of time the video had to be at. Also, another struggle was that students had to shoot their own videos and come together and combined them. The struggle with that was to put together the videos in a way that made sense and not make it so random. Some groups had to create a way where the video doesn’t become repetitive or boring to watch. They had to come up with ways to capture and entertain the audience’s attention. The biggest struggle for all the groups was to make sure their theme was present for everyone to identify. It is important for the videos make sense and to demonstrate the main theme while being creative as well.

Using video as a communication tool is a better way to communicate than by communicating with writing or photographs. By using video, people can see what is actually happening and what sounds are present during that time. The viewers can get a real sense of the time and place of the video being shown, so that they can connect to it as well. Using video is also more intriguing to watch as a viewer and it keeps the audience on their toes of what’s going to happen next. It is a very effective communication tool, and it helps get the message across better than a picture or words. Also, when creating a video, you can add music or special effects to really empathize the message getting across. You can change the whole concept of the video by adding music and changing the filters. Another reason why videos are more effective is by being able to reduce speed or speed up the videos to feel an emotion. If the meaning of the video means crazy then the editors can speed up the time to fast motion so it relates to the main theme.

Sometimes the public nature of the videos can affect the subject matter in the videos, however the group representing time, the public nature did not affect the videos. In the group, the students had to record things that represented themselves and time. For most of the student’s videos in the group, they did not record much of the public and they mostly recorded things they were doing. For the videos, the mood was quite for most and there weren’t that many people in the videos disturbing the movie. Even if the video was affected by the public nature, the video had music play over it so cancel out any noise. The music of the video sets the tone of what kind of theme it is. Without music, the videos would not get the message across effectively.

In every movie, students had to incorporate their self portraits into the videos. That was challenging for most students because they had to be the ones recording as well. Another challenge was that the students needed to record their videos with themselves being portrayed in the video so the class knows what student is being represented in the videos. In every shot of the videos, the students had to represent themselves in some way, either literal or metaphorical and along with the word that was the main theme. It was challenging for most to do both tasks of a self portrait and representing the main theme. In some groups, the team mates would all meet together and be in a couple shots to represent that they are a group together, while covering the self portrait aspect.

There were no big issues with sharing the video on social media. It easy to transfer videos onto a desktop and to upload the video to Twitter or Facebook from there. I am sure a lot of students thought of this processes the easiest because everyone is so familiar with social media.
The overall experience with iMovie and the video project differed for everyone, but now, all students are able to use iMovie again for other courses or productions. All students have the knowledge to shoot, edit and post their own videos
